Advantages and Disadvanteges of Reflectometer

The advantages of using reflactometer

- A hand held reflactometer is very portable.
- It is inexpensive because of low initial cost and low levels of maintenance.
- It is easy to operate
- You just need 1 drop of fluid to do the measurement
- The temperature does not have to be exact 20 degrees Celsius
- There is no need to wait for lab result it gives ınstant result.
- It can be used on most water-based metalworking fluids.
- It can be programmed to calculate measurements with up to 5 different scales.

The disadvantages of using reflactometer

- It can be inaccurate when the system uses hard water with a high mineral content or when tramp oil is present.
- Difficult to analyze materials with lower refractive index than that of the prism.
- One must bring a possibly hazardous material close to the eyes to read hand held refractometers.
- Less suitable for continuous SG reading in a fermenting must or to determine the end-SG.
